Teaching, MAT (Boston)

The mission of the Master of Arts in Teaching program is to develop K–12 classroom teachers with the skills and intellectual acumen to be effective, to question systemic norms, and to anticipate and shape a more equitable, globally connected society. The program offers an appreciation for understanding today's elementary and secondary schools' diverse educational needs, social concerns, and cultural values. This graduate degree in teaching seeks to enhance foundational skills, broaden perspectives, and strengthen the ability to inspire and educate. The MAT, which includes a full term of student teaching and prepracticum experiential fieldwork, seeks to produce graduates well positioned to make a meaningful impact in their school, community, and students' lives. 

The MAT program leads to endorsement for an initial teacher license from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education for elementary grades 1–6; or secondary grades 5–12 for English, history, social sciences, and political science; or grades 8–12 for mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, and Earth and space science; or  for English as a Second Language for grades PreK–8 or 5–12.

Students who have already earned their first initial teacher license from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education can also complete a concentration in English as a Second Language, which leads to endorsement for an additional initial license for ESL from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education for grades PreK–8 or for 5–12. The MAT program is aligned with the expectations required of teacher licensure programs by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
