ESC 1100. The Geosphere. (3 Hours)

Introduces geology and the geosphere. Studies the composition, internal structure, and surface processes of Earth. Examines minerals and rocks, plate tectonics, geologic time, and Earth’s dynamic systems (volcanism, earthquakes, etc.). Emphasizes how Earth has evolved over time and how its geology interacts with the hydrosphere and biosphere.

ESC 1150. The Atmosphere. (3 Hours)

Introduces atmospheric science. Examines the composition and structure of Earth’s atmosphere and the physical and chemical processes that govern weather and climate. Studies thermodynamics; cloud physics; dynamics of air flow; major weather systems such as cyclones, thunderstorms, hurricanes; the boundary layer near the surface; and global climate dynamics.

ESC 1200. The Hydrosphere. (3 Hours)

Examines the physical structure, biological provinces, and varying chemistries of Earth’s ocean and other water resources. Explores Earth’s water in motion and at rest─how it cycles through ocean, atmosphere, glaciers, surface streams, groundwater, soils, and living systems. Studies how water shapes landscapes, drives weather and climate, and affects hazards such as floods and landslides.
